Philomena Gehringer Obituary

Philomena Marie Gehringer, (Banjo), (Phil), 81, of Eastpointe, was called home with the Lord near the midnight hour Wednesday, April 8th, 2020. She passed away peacefully with her grandaughter at her bedside.

She was born on April 21st, 1938, to Henry Charles and Rose Marie Gehringer, (Tassone), in Detroit, Michigan. Dear sister of Patsy Ann Hansford and the late Henry Charles Gehringer Jr., (Hank).

Philomena attended and graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit Michigan and also achieved some further education at Lawrence Technical school in Southfield, Michigan. Her and her family owned Dutch's Snack Bar in the 1960's, located on seven mile road in Detroit, where she enjoyed working for many years. Banjo became a friend to many and a cherished role model/mentor to that generation of teens in the area. She later worked and retired from an assembly line worker position at Borg Warner Automotive in Sterling Heights, Michigan and was a member of the local UAW.

Between the 60's and the 80's Phil was also an avid member and Leader for the Girl Scouts, played women's softball for several teams representing local Detroit & Hamtramck bars, coached & umpired girl's basketball and also coached girl's softball while she again became a cherished friend to many and a mentor to countless young women in the Detroit & Hamtramck area.

Phil also enjoyed watching all types of sports, playing cards, camping, travelling, fishing, crafting, reading, making puzzles, listening to country music and she loved cruising Belle Isle. Phil spent over 30 years as a member of the Detroit Sportsmen Congress in Shelby Township. She enjoyed serving as a Deputy Ranger at the DSC's family Campground community in Oxford, where she was a friend to many and known for her famous spaghetti & meatball fundraiser dinners.

Philomena is survived by her grandchildren, (Whom she raised), Kristen Marie Clark, (Stephen) and Philip Victor Nevinski Jr., Great-grandchildren, Taylor Marie Nevinski, Teagan McAllister Nevinski, unborn baby boy Nevinski and Breanna Rose Fischer, (Clark). She is also survived by her Sister, Aunt, Theresa Forbes, (William), several nieces, nephews, cousins and her cherished dog, Freeman. Passed on before her are her parents, daughter, Kathleen Rose Nevinski,(Gehringer), grandson Jeremy Nevinski, brother, and brother-in-law, James Douglas Hansford and several other cherished loved ones including her cherished canine fur babies, Patches, Bo-Bo, Suzie-Q, Cuddles and Happy.

Phil was a very special person to many people and made a lasting mark on the hearts & lives of all those that knew her.
During this time in the world our family is unable to have a suitable memorial to properly celebrate the life of Philomena. Her friends and loved ones will be notified at a future date of when and where we will hold the memorial to honor this remarkable woman.
